CTM Fee Reduction
The European Commission has announced the abolition of the registration fee for European Community trade mark (“CTM”) applications; the fee was previously at least 850 Euros, even for the simplest application. This abolition takes effect from 1st May 2009, but will benefit applications that have already been filed by that date – provided the registration fee has not already become due. Any new applications filed now will therefore automatically benefit from this change.
On the same day, the filing fee will rise by 150 Euros – so there is advantage in filing CTM applications before the end of April 2009, if at all possible.
In view of the simplification of the procedure, we are also reducing our professional charges at the registration stage. Taken together, these changes will reduce the cost of obtaining CTM registration quite substantially - by something in the order of £850 overall (with an even greater saving for applications filed in April 2009).
